Hays County Spring Round Up Competitions:

*Junior, Intermediate and Senior 4-H members must qualify in the below competitions to move on to District 10*

  • Food Show
    • At the Food Show you can choose a recipe from the contest categories and then prepare and present it to a panel of judges. During your interview with the judges, you will show how you prepared it, the nutrients and ingredients, personal dietary needs, healthy substitutions, and a cost analysis.
  • Food Challenge
    • At the Food Challenge, teams of 3-4 students receive a list of ingredients and have 40 minutes to create a dish. The teams then present their dish to judges and are scored on preparation, serving size, food safety concerns, nutritional value and cost. Students qualify at the county and district level to compete at the state contest.
  • Educational Presentation
    • Educational presentation is a structured demonstration of knowledge and skills in a specific project area (Agriculture & Natural Resources | Animal Science | Beef | Health & Wellness | Horse | Family & Consumer Education | Open | Promote 4-H | Safety & Injury Prevention |STEM | Sheep & Goat | Swine) conducted by a 4-H member. It is designed to showcase the member’s ability to effectively communicate information on a particular topic to an audience. These presentations can take carious forms, including: method demonstration and illustrated talk.
  • Public Speaking:
    • Public Speaking is a program and activity within the 4-H youth development organization that focuses on helping young people develop their communication and public speaking skills. Benefits if public speaking: Builds Confidence | Develops Communication Skills | Critical Thinking | Leadership Development | Personal Growth.

District 10 Spring Round Up Competitions:

  • Educational Presentation

  • Livestock & Horse Quiz Bowl
    • Quiz bowl is an opportunity to demonstrate all of the information that you have gained through the past year through their animal project. This is a contest that will help your student learn about his or her project while getting the opportunity to compete on a state level. It is a team event where you compete against another team and whoever buzzes in first, gets to answer the questions.

  • FCH Quiz Bowl
    • A “Quiz Bowl” is a quiz game that tests teams of 4 on their knowledge of basic nutrition, consumer information, food and kitchen safety, food preparation skills and storage, health and fashion and interior design skills. Up against the clock, the 4-H’ers buzz in to answer a question and earn points for the correct answers. Teams advance in a tournament- system bracket to win the competition.
  • Entomology Judging
    • Entomology contests introduce youth to the fundamentals of entomology and develop skills in identification and common insects and their relatives. 4-H entomology contests consist of two parts: (1) a written examination; and (2) insect identification.
  • Food Challenge
