District 10 Spring Round Up Competitions:

• Leaders 4 Life
  • Leaders 4 Life involves two components: a Parliamentary Procedure Demonstration and a Question-and-Answer Session. Each team will consist of 4-6 members: president, vice president, secretary, treasurer (at minimum). Teams will present a simulated 4-H meeting, not to exceed 20 minutes long. Teams will be given a list of three problems, which they must incorporate into their demonstration. Each team will provide its own minutes, treasurer’s report, letter of communication, and committee report. The Q& A part will consist of 12 questions for each team. The questions will be rotated through each team member.
• Meat Judging
  • Students are given a set of meat that they must evaluate and score. After they have made their decision of which cut of meat is the best they will write a set of oral reasons. It is a competitive environment to test their knowledge of the subject of meat science.
• Livestock Judging
  • Livestock Judging is the evaluation of an animal’s physical traits. The ultimate goal is to compare and contrast the four animals in a given class against one another, and then compare them to what is considered the “ideal” animal.
• Range & Pasture ID/Range Evaluation
  • You’ll learn to identify all of the 74 native and introduced grasses which are listed on the Master Plant List for 4-H. The grasses on the grass contest are important for their value in making decisions about the Texas forage resources, their health, and help to determine the change that has occurred on our land base in Texas. You will learn how plants grow, grazing impacts on land, grass and plant identification and examination.
• Consumer Decision Making
  • Consumer Decision Making contest is based on skills of consumer observation, comparison, and the ability to make a fact-based purchase. Each participant is expected to defend their purchases to a panel of judges.
• Wool & Mohair Judging
  • The Wool Contest tests a 4-H members knowledge and ability to determine the grade, rank, and categorize wool. The contest provides an opportunity for youth to compete and develop skills that can be used on a sheep ranching operation, within the wool industry, or agricultural teaching field. The contest will be divided into two areas: fleece evaluation of grading rail and wool class placing and reasons.
• Soil Judging
  • Contestants will judge four soil profiles with 20-minutes allowed for each and determine the soil characteristics of the profiles and make interpretations based on observation.
• Duds 2 Dazzle *Must Qualify at Hays County Spring Round Up on March 4th*
  • During Duds 2 Dazzle, teams of 4 to 4 receive textiles and each team has 60 minutes to create a new project using items from the supply closet. Each team provides their own supply kit. The teams then present their item to a team of judges. You may also be tested on what you have learned about how the fashion and interior design industry impacts the environment, specifically the waste system.
• Fashion Show & Natural Fibers*Must Qualify at Hays County Spring Round Up on March 4th*
  • The Fashion Show is designed for individuals to showcase their skills in buying/or construction. Individuals create a clothing or fashion item, complete paperwork and interview with a panel of judges, and last but not least, model the outfit on the runway. Knowledge of natural fibers such a as cotton and wool/mohair may also be showcased in the Natural Fibers Contest portion of the Fashion Show.
• Talent Showcase (Formally Share the Fun)*Must Qualify at Hays County Spring Round Up on March 4th*
  • 4-H Talent Showcase is a competitive event related to the Theater and Performance Arts project. 4-H members have the chance to develop a spirit of cooperation with their fellow 4-H members; develop self-confidence through public performance; stimulate interest in broad-based recreation in 4-H clubs; encourage 4-H members to discover and develop their talents; and to grow socially, culturally, and further develop leadership skills. But most importantly, theater and performance arts are about having fun! Categories are: Choreographed Routines | Variety Show | Musical/ Instrumental | Vocal | 4-H Skit | Poetry/Prose | Solo/Band Performance
